This is an excerpt from\u00a0 Mushrooms<\/em> by Sylvia Plath, first collected in The Colossus and Other Poems<\/em>, William Heinemann, London, 1960.<\/em><\/p>\n

Overnight, very<\/em>
\n Whitely, discreetly,<\/em>
\n Very quietly<\/em><\/p>\n

Our toes, our noses<\/em>
\n Take hold on the loam,<\/em>
\n Acquire the air.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nobody sees us,<\/em>
\n Stops us, betrays us;<\/em>
\n The small grains make room.<\/em><\/p>\n

Soft fists insist on<\/em><\/p>\n

Heaving the needles,<\/em>
\n The leafy bedding,<\/em><\/p>\n

Even the paving…<\/em><\/p>\n

I thought I’d better write a fungi poem of my own…<\/p>\n

FUNGI WEATHER<\/em><\/p>\n

In this dry season<\/em><\/p>\n

They still come.<\/em><\/p>\n

Entombed warriors, they wait, massed, in readiness.<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s their mission –<\/em><\/p>\n

Rain or no rain,<\/em><\/p>\n

when the days shorten,<\/em><\/p>\n

they will rise.<\/em><\/p>\n

Through ground hard as iron, stony, cracked, compacted<\/em><\/p>\n

They heave up, giving birth\u00a0 to themselves,<\/em><\/p>\n

Crowning.<\/em><\/p>\n

We see a shoulder, an elbow <\/em><\/p>\n

Or a round white scalp.<\/em><\/p>\n
