Late in life\u00a0 – we, her children, don’t quite know when – my mother wrote several mysterious, beautiful poems. This one was about her mother, Phoebe.<\/p>\n

I too sharpen<\/em>
\nMore and more each year<\/em>
\n To my mother’s likeness<\/em>
\n I see her<\/em>
\n From the corner of my eye<\/em>
\n As I pass the mirror<\/em>
\nSee her reflected<\/em>
\n In the glass of pictures<\/em>
\n In the brass of trays.<\/em><\/p>\n

Passivity<\/em>
\n You accepted for yourself<\/em>
\n But rejected for your child.<\/em><\/p>\n

From the acceptance<\/em>
\n And that rejection<\/em>
\n I moved freely<\/em>
\nSafely<\/em>
\n Happily<\/em>
\n You did not break your way through walls of others’ making<\/em>
\n But held the torch<\/em>
\n And showed the way<\/em>
\n And held aside the strangling vine<\/em>
\n To let through the lovely light of the sun.<\/em><\/p>\n
